The Frenchie Behind Charlie & Me is as Fabulous as You'd Expect

Kristen Schott | March 10, 2017 | Feature Features

This Newport Beach-based Frenchie loves seeing her name in lights.
Newport's favorite Frenchie strikes a pose amid the shelves at her namesake Charlie & Me dog boutique at Lido Marina Village.

Her theme song is BeyoncĂ©’s “Flawless.” Her owner once commissioned artist Lori Gilbert to paint an Andy Warhol-style portrait of her (the price tag: $1,500). And she’s the namesake of the Charlie & Me dog boutique at Lido Marina Village. No, this 4-year-old purebred French bulldog is not your average pooch. This is a gal with sass, the self-confidence of a larger animal and, perhaps, a smidge of an ego. “She’s become quite the local celebrity, and it’s starting to go to her head,” quips Taylor Beauchamp, whose parents gifted her with Charlie on her 25th birthday. Her four-legged friend became the inspiration for and face of her store. “Photo shoots have become a normal part of her life,” says Beauchamp. So, what’s a day in Charlie’s life like? Mornings begin with a trot on the boardwalk with her best bud. Afterward, the duo heads to GritCycle: Charlie socializes on the patio while Beauchamp takes a spin. Then it comes time for “work,” which gets going when Charlie “makes her rounds to all of the stores [at LMV], giving her hellos... and showing off her outfit,” says Beauchamp. One of her fave looks: a bandana from her eponymous collection. It’s a must when vacationing with Beauchamp at her parents’ home in Palm Desert, where Charlie lounges poolside. It’s something she’s also done in Cabo San Lucas, one of the places to which this jet-setter and her fam have flown via private plane. In her travel bag: her fur blanket by MiaCara and beef flank steak treats from JustFoodForDogs on PCH. Among her other perks are strolls with walker service Brooke’s Prancing Paws; a $400 handcrafted bed by One Ear Dog for snoozing at the shop; a lounge chair upon which to perch during Beauchamp’s mani-pedi sessions at Glo Nail Bar (Charlie’s known for her snoring); and playdates with Mr. Higgins. “He’s a poised mini schnauzer,” Beauchamp chuckles. “It’s a forced friendship.” That doesn’t sound too bad, given that spending time together means evening Duffy rides in the harbor. Oh, the romance!
