The 28th Annual Waterman's Ball

| November 7, 2017 | Parties

THE PARTY It was a hang 10 good time as more than 500 surf legends and industry vets gathered to celebrate the 28th annual Waterman’s Ball at The Ranch at Laguna Beach. For the last 27 years, the lively affair has brought in more than $7 million in support of the SIMA Environmental Fund and its 19 beneficiaries that work to protect and conserve our oceans. THE SCENE To kick off the evening, partygoers, like Rip Curl’s Kelly Gibson and Billabong’s Shannan North, placed bids on 200-plus silent auction items on the Harvest Patio and grooved to the acoustic tunes of the Ken Garcia Band. Then, it was on to the ninth fairway, where a family-style meal of antipasto platters, garlic-roasted jidori chicken and strawberry shortcake delighted. THE HIGHLIGHTS It was a sparkling scene as honorees Bethany Hamilton, Herbie Fletcher, Cyrill Gutsch and International Surfing Association President Fernando Aguerre were recognized for their impact on the industry and the preservation of our waters. But it was the live auction—where an Audi A3 e-tron clocked in for a cool $34,000 and a trip for two to Tavarua, Fiji, sold twice for $10,000 each—that truly made a splash. -Allison Mitchell
