Spirit of Excellence Gala

Top of the Class
The Spirit of Excellence Gala earns high marks by bringing in more than $780,000 for the Irvine Public Schools Foundation.

It was a spirited night when the Irvine Public Schools Foundation feted its 20-year history and honored its famous alumni—including actor Will Ferrell and rock group Thrice—at its annual gala at Kia Motors America. The affair kicked off with a reception followed by dinner and ended by raising $780,000-plus.

Though Ferrell could not attend, former Saturday Night Live cast member Nasim Pedrad was on hand to toast him for his commitment to the arts. Thrice’s Ed Breckenridge, James Riley Breckenridge, Dustin Kensrue and Teppei Teranishi took home the excellence in music award; and Irvine High student Ryan Lee garnered the first IPSF arts scholarship. MLB All-Star Mark Trumbo and No Doubt’s Tom Dumont rounded out the VIP crowd.

Performances from Woodbridge High’s Grammy winning choir and Thrice entertained, while jokes from Pedrad and a Ron Burgundy impression from Lee scored laughs. But jaws dropped when FivePoint CEO Emile Haddad announced a $100,000 donation. Three cheers! ‒Allison Mitchell
