Song and Dance

| January 8, 2013 | Parties National

It’s an evening that never disappoints—Chapman University’s American Celebration. And this year there was even more to celebrate. The musical stage show delighted guests with performances by students and university President Jim Doti, who donned a skull cap and faux six-pack abs to dance the part of Yul Brynner in The King and I’s “Shall We Dance” scene. His partner: Julia Argyros, of course! And everyone was tickled when the man of the hour, actor Richard Dreyfuss, announced his wish to teach at the school next year. The evening raised more than $2 million, but not even that was the highlight. That came when former Ambassador to Spain George Argyros (a Chapman alum) offered up an $8 million gift toward the construction of the school’s arts center. As a gesture of thanks, Chapman will name its future 1,050-seat concert theater the Julianne Argyros Orchestra Hall. It’s enough to make us all want to dance. Photos by Jeanine Hill
