BACK IN BLACK Visit Laguna Art Museum now through Oct. 9 to discover Black and White: Contemporary Art from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, a new exhibit curated by the late Frederick’s wife, Billie Milam Weisman, the foundation’s director. “The exhibition celebrates Mr. Weisman’s legacy and passion for the arts, as well as our mission of presenting California art,” says Laguna Art Museum executive director Julie Perlin Lee. View 30 works by a range of California artists that all share a common use of black and white. “Frederick R. Weisman would say that when you are fortunate enough to be able to collect art, you have a responsibility, not only to the artists but also to share their works with the public,” adds Milam Weisman. PAINTING THE TOWN Newport Beach’s Civic Center Park continues to evolve with the debut of its Phase VII Sculpture Exhibition. The public display showcases pieces that are on loan to the city of Newport Beach for a two-year period, which can be enjoyed free of charge by locals and visitors alike. The latest round of installments includes 10 new eye-catching works, all of which are positioned within the natural setting of the park. Highlights include a vibrant red steel sculpture titled “Eve” by Joe Forrest Sackett, in which five women appear to be dancing in a circle; “David” by Miggy Buck, which depicts two monolithic feet reminiscent of Michelangelo’s iconic sculpture of the same name; and Marguerite Elliot’s “Where Have All The Birds Gone?”—a 15-foot tower with three crows resting atop it that call to mind the roughly 3 billion birds that have passed due to human causes over the past five decades.
