Explore an innovative moving art piece from Laguna Beach local, artist Andrew Myers in his latest creation, Gone With The Wind, an ode to the late Anthony Bourdain. Myers has long admired the life and legacy Bourdain left behind as a celebrated chef, actor and documentarian. With the fourth anniversary of Bourdain’s death approaching on June 8, Myers felt this was an ideal time to unveil the piece.

The large, mechanical piece measures 48” x 60” and is composed using charcoal, canvas, lacquer, and oil paint on wood board. With the help of engineering techniques, each section is able to move in a way that resembles the fluttering of wind. This unique process is time consuming but distinguishes Myers’ pieces.
Myers is known for his screw art technique, which utilizes thousands of screws, arranged to resemble precise shapes. The process of screw art is unique to Myers’ studio and involves drilling screws closely together into a wooden board. The varying heights of the screws create a three-dimensional sculptural relief, which Myers then oil-paints with a miniscule paint brush.

Anthony Bourdaine passed away while filming Parts Unknown, a TV series dedicated to travel, culture, and understanding the human condition. Bourdain’s life of fame began after the release of his bestselling book, Kitchen Confidential in 2000. From 2002 until his untimely death in 2018, Bourdain starred in cooking shows on the Food Network, Travel Channel, and CNN.
This isn’t Myer’s first time breaking the mold. He has worked with a variety of high profile clients, including Tiffany & Co. He was commissioned to construct 14 portraits of the company’s founder using his very own screw art technique. Myers has also been commissioned by Audi, the Dallas Design District, and Marriott Hotels, among others.
Myers first invented screw art in 2008 with the aim of setting himself apart as a distinctive craftsman. “It is my opinion that an artist is successful when they can express a feeling and make someone think, while at the same time having the skill and discipline of craftsmanship. I will always struggle, I will always think, I will always feel, but I will never give up this pursuit to be unique,” says Myers, according to his website.

Myers’s work can be found in a handful of international art collections and has been featured in notable shows, such as Art Hamptons and the LA Art Show. His pieces are currently on display in the Laguna Beach Debilzan gallery exhibit and in many other private collections around the world.
