Romance of the Mission

THE PARTY It’s a sparkling experience—attending a concert with a crowd of 450-plus amid the ruins of the Great Stone Church, listening as the sounds ricochet off the crumbling facade and ascend into the sky. Yes, the Romance of the Mission is an eve unlike any other, one that this year netted $221,000 to preserve the San Juan Capistrano landmark. THE GUESTS Executive Director Mechelle Lawrence Adams shimmered in an embroidered frock as she honored Sheila and Jim Peterson. And guests were thrilled by the chance to win a glittering $10,000 package from Lugano Diamonds. But the most luminous moment came when Grammy- and Tony Award-winning vocalist Heather Headley took the stage. THE HIGHLIGHTS How beautiful it was to hear Headley sing works from Elton John and Bob Dylan, and the traditional “Swallows” tune—backed by a choir. In her words? “This is... bigger than I am. It’s a sacred space.” -Kristen Schott
