Rising entrepreneur Philip Bates is creating the next generation of hotels through his SoCal-based development and management company, TMC Hospitality (tmch.co), with openings on the horizon in Palm Springs; San José del Cabo, Mexico; Santa Barbara; and more. Here’s a look at where he’s been and where he’s headed next.

How did TMC Hospitality come about? TMC was founded in 2016 with a desire to develop and manage boutique hotels in the places we like to go and in the ways we like to travel—finding a place to stay that’s well-designed and has good food and beverage offerings, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be an all-inclusive resort. We recognized a trend in what we now call ‘social group travel’—people traveling in groups of three or more—and launched our two boutique brands, Bode and Drift, to cater to that segment.
What’s in the pipeline for 2022? I am most excited about Drift Palm Springs. Drift properties feature an edgy, minimalistic design; locally sourced decor; and immersive experiences that draw from the surrounding area and ingrain guests into the local culture. We have a great site downtown with enchanting mountain views; it’s going to be very special.
How do you think we will see travel evolve this year? I think we will see more interesting concepts emerge in local markets. The pandemic has taught us to appreciate the small things, which will lead people to seek out ways to get to know and experience the cities in which they are traveling; any ‘locals only’ type of offering will have that appeal. For example, at our new Drift San José del Cabo, we are offering a mezcal bar developed in partnership with Mezcal Exiliado and a local taco truck accompanied by live music in the courtyard.
Favorite staycation? Hotel Joaquin in Laguna Beach. It’s a really charming boutique property in north Laguna that just has a special feel to it.
