Music enthusiasts filled the Ocean Institute in Dana Point to hear smooth sounds performed by their favorite rhythm-makers while supporting a great cause by way of the venue’s annual Jazz Festival. It’s a lively weekend of grooves that benefits the nonprofit’s marine-focused education programs, which are experienced by 115,000 kids a year. The high note came during the Saturday night gala. There was duck foie ganache from The St. Regis’ Frederic Castan on which to indulge and a dinner for 10 prepared in-home by four chefs up for bid. (That fetched a fab $6,250.) Rick Braun (a jazz giant), Norman Brown (a guitarist since age 8) and Elliott Yamin (an R&B vocalist you may’ve seen on American Idol) made a splash with the audience before the fest sounded off with a fundraising total of $170,000 net.
