In a sea of saltboxes, this contemporary Newport Beach home trades tones of white and blue for eclectic art pieces and stunning stonework.
Myriad wall textures add interest to the open-air living room, which is outfitted with a House of Morrison sofa and Robert James coffee tables.

The dream team of Morrison Interiors, Brandon Architects and Patterson Custom Homes collaborated over nearly four years to bring this contemporary masterpiece to life in Newport Beach. “The client’s vision was to create a home where guests immediately feel at ease and can immerse themselves fully in the present moment,” shares principal designer Denise Morrison of Morrison Interiors. “The interior design reflects the client’s desire for a vibrant, youthful atmosphere. Each detail— fabric, wallpaper, lighting—was thoughtfully selected to realize this vision, resulting in a dynamic interplay of texture and color.” On the outside, Koheid Design handled the landscaping, and Brandon Architects embraced a seamless use of textured large-format limestone from the exterior to the interior. “This material wraps around the exterior and continues onto many interior walls, enhancing the home’s cohesive design,” notes Morrison. “We emphasized this texture throughout the interior while incorporating industrial elements to add grounding and a touch of masculinity.”
“This home was designed in a transitional aesthetic that leans to some more contemporary forms. The unique site helped influence the architecture, and one interesting design element that developed over time was using the stone element to bisect the guesthouse across from the entry,” shares Chris Brandon, president and principal of Brandon Architects. “This connection better integrated the guesthouse into the overall architecture and allowed us to create a moment where we could introduce the front entry closer to the street. The indoor-outdoor entertaining and connection to the yard elements were essential to the design. We also used the stone elements to bring the exterior architecture into the home to add better connectivity and richness to the spaces.”
With a passion for entertaining, the homeowners have a dining room that seats up to 10.
With a penchant for entertaining, the homeowners wanted to maximize storage, seating areas and space to host their friends and family. “This home features entertainment at every turn: a bonus room with shuffleboard, multiple dining tables, a spacious bar with seating, a game room stocked with board games, and extensive outdoor space including a bocce ball court, pool and plenty of seating areas,” says Morrison. At the day’s end, the primary suite’s bathroom acts as a spalike retreat from all the excitement of hosting guests. “The primary bath showcases Breccia Loire marble as its centerpiece, featuring a stunning blend of earthy tones with delicate accents of blue and green,” notes the designer. “Complementing this, a subtle limestone floor and custom stone mosaic shower enhances the overall balance and harmony of the space.”
“Working with the clients was easy. They were great at sharing with us what they needed and helped us get to the end result,” reflects Brandon, who says an unexpected visitor inspired a finishing touch in the home. “A chicken from the neighbor’s yard would frequently visit the construction site. The chicken inspired a piece of art in the house and helps add to the story of creating the home,” he quips. “Any time you can incorporate art with a good story into the home, it always adds to the feeling of it being more of a home—one we hope they will enjoy and create many more memories to come in.”
