Take a right up Dover Drive off the Pacific Coast Highway and a left when you hit Castaways Park to discover one of Newport Beach’s most coveted addresses: Cliff Drive. It’s here that Erica Bryen of Erica Bryen Design joined forces with Brandon Architects, Jason Gonterman of Gonterman Construction and Garden Studio Design to create one of the neighborhood’s most beautiful homes. A project three years in the making, planning began in 2021 and was completed in February 2024. “This project was very close to home because it was a personal home for a builder we have worked with for a long time,” says Bryen. “We wanted to create a clean, modern home that embraced the amazing view but was also warm, cozy and inviting because the owners are big entertainers.”
The living room features a custom sectional by Erica Bryen Design and a Robert James coffee table.
With spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and the Newport Harbor, the great outdoors served as a key focal point for the entire design team. “The Cliff Drive residence was inspired by the indisputable harbor and ocean views that informed the dramatic cantilevering floor and roof plates off the entry and primary suite,” shares Brandon Architects principal Christopher Brandon. “These elements frame views all the way to the rear of the home. Expansive glass throughout the residence enhances this notion. It is coupled with a contemporary yet warm material palette that provides an engaging entry sequence, nestled between concrete walls as you arrive at the expansive open first-floor great room and kitchen spaces.”
In the great room, Bryen created a custom gray sectional that hugs the space, where a Robert James coffee table offers a place for elegant books and treasures. A floor-to-ceiling fireplace in rich black draws the eye upward, as does a contemporary chandelier and wood-paneled ceiling. Nearby, the kitchen is equipped with Wolf appliances, cabinetry by Ziething Cabinets and kitchenware by Blue Pheasant. “The custom live-edge table extending from the kitchen island is beautiful,” notes Bryen. “It’s a truly one-of-a-kind piece, and we love how it turned out.”
The bedrooms and bathrooms were equally given thoughtful and creative touches. Eye-catching wallpapers by Porter Teleo and Phillip Jefferies were used throughout; rugs and carpets by Loloi and Jaipur added warmth; and modern Ziething Cabinets dressers complement custom beds by Erica Bryen Design. In the bathrooms, Italian favorite Fantini Rubinetti was tapped for fixtures, and Pigeon & Poodle decor brought the spaces together with modernity and whimsy.
Outside, a rooftop deck and seating area punctuated by a fire pit from Designers Resource Collection offer gathering spaces for the homeowners and their myriad guests. “The rooftop deck is stunning and can accommodate many people. It really showcases the outstanding view and amazing fireplace, which was the goal,” says Bryen. “This Newport Beach home is so special and unique because of its incredible panoramic views of the bay and ocean.”
The local Orange County homeowners have found their forever home thanks to Bryen and her talented counterparts. “Collaborating with the family was so fun because I know them so well and work with them regularly,” says Bryen. “It was really rewarding to finish the project and create something they’re all so happy with.”
