FRESH FLAVORS Schedule a lunch date during your next South Coast Plaza shopping spree at Populaire Modern Bistro, a new California-French concept opening within the Saks Fifth Avenue wing. The restaurant is the brainchild of friends and accomplished chefs Ross Pangilinan (of Terrace by Mix Mix, Mix Mix Kitchen & Bar and ReMix Kitchen Bar) and Nicholas Weber, who will serve as executive chef. Forthcoming menu highlights include bavette steak with sauce au poivre (shown above), Spanish octopus with koji creme fraiche, pickled green tomato and hemp seed crumble, and ratatouille with egg yolk and cave-aged Gruyere. “I can’t think of anyone who deserves his own restaurant more than Nick. We work really well together and he’s an extremely talented chef,” shares Pangilinan. “We can’t wait to welcome guests to experience Populaire.” southcoastplaza.com

GUIDING LIGHT Local interior designer Lisa McDennon has once again teamed up with Hinkley Lighting to illuminate spaces with her artful chandeliers, pendants and sconces. “These collections are each designed to have a very distinct personality, yet incorporate similar tones in their finishes to bring a very modern play between scale and pattern to life,” says McDennon. “From Nikko’s intersection of metal and cage patterns to the bold silhouette of Luca, Hinkley and I have worked to bring an exciting variety of options—and possibilities—into today’s homes.” Shop the collection at Nuance Home in Laguna Beach, Lighting Innovation in San Clemente, Lightstyles in Costa Mesa and Orange, and at Victor’s Lighting in Orange. lisamcdennon.com; hinkleylighting.com

LOCAL LEGEND It’s been five decades since Jan Gaffney opened the first Jan’s Health Bar inside George’s Surf Shop in Huntington Beach. Known for its healthy take on sandwiches, salads and smoothies, the brand has since expanded, opening four additional outposts in Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach, Corona del Mar and Irvine since 2013. In 2010, Gaffney passed the torch to former employee and Huntington Beach native Poppy Holguin, whose passion for the business and its origins shine bright as she ushers Jan’s into its next decade. “It was important to me to bring the life, love and history of Huntington Beach into other communities as we expanded,” says Holguin, who has her eyes set on Long Beach for her sixth location, where longtime favorites like the peanut butter banana date smoothie and the tuna salad sandwich will continue to be offered. “Honest, approachable food never goes out of style.” janshealthbar.com
