Magic Show

| November 3, 2014 | Parties

It was a mystical moment when South Coast Repertory put on its 51st season gala, an evening of magic, theatrics and fundraising inspired by its production of The Tempest. The theme of it all? Grand Illusions, but of course. Theater aficionados walked a white carpet through a hall of mirrors to enter a cocktail reception on the terrace. Here, they sipped Smoke and Mirrors martinis and flutes of Le Grand Court├óge Champagne while enjoying enchanting music from String Theory’s sculptured harp. Up next was surprise entertainment from comedy magician Mac King, who chose volunteer assistants (and local notables) Julianne Argyros and Bill Weinberg to perform onstage with him. An alfresco dinner, dessert and dancing at Club Argyros rounded things out—and before the curtains closed, $400,000 had been raised for the institution’s programs. Applause, please! -Photos by Debora Robinson
