Laguna Art Museum's California Cool Art Auction

| March 21, 2017 | Parties

Aficionados bid away at the California Cool Art Auction and raised more than $366,000 for Laguna Art Museum.

THE PARTY When Laguna Art Museum held its annual auction, the creative appeal was all around thanks to the venue’s modern oceanfront digs, the range of works from 100-plus talents and the ensembles sported by the 350 enthusiasts, who raised their paddles for the pieces that piqued their interest.

THE GUESTS Co-chairwoman Sara Heeschen paired booties with an olive-green frock for a structured style, while her counterpart, Deborah Lake, went mod with a shift dress. (Mixed media, yes?) Then there was committee member Ruben Flores, whose velvet jacket was right on trend, and Aaron Bastian of Bonhams, who looked cool behind his funky specs as he led the live auction.

THE HIGHLIGHTS The excitement was palpable in the Steele Gallery as the creations hit the block. Lita Albuquerque’s pigment on panel and gold leaf on resin painting, “Emanation,” brought in $13,000, and Peter Alexander’s urethane sculpture, “8/9/15 (Orange Bar),” landed a bright $17,500. But none of that compared to the final tally: The evening raised more than $366,000—a true work of art. -Kristen Schott
