It was a splash heard round O.C.’s shores when the Ocean Institute announced that it netted $260,000 during its annual Jazz Festival, a weekend of cool sounds, chic eats and other fun at the nonprofit’s waterfront venue. The high note, of course, was the Saturday evening gala. Some 200 music-lovers enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions, and a four-course dinner concocted by renowned local chefs. The St. Regis Monarch Beach’s Frederic Castan cooked up a pan-roasted loups de mer, while the Montage Laguna Beach’s Rob Wilson dished out a sea salt-roasted chateaubriand. And then came the music: Jazz greats Spencer Day, Eric Marienthal and Peter White joined Dave Benoit onstage to play smooth tunes and hot rhythms—and the crowd grooved all night long. –Photos by Rick Chatillon
