High Hopes

| May 2, 2014 | Parties National

More than 300 spirited supporters of the Alzheimer’s Association filled the Balboa Bay Resort for its annual gala. This year’s theme? Creating Hope—and guests did exactly that by raising more than $525,000 for the nonprofit’s mission to end the disease. And here’s how they did it: They bid on live auction items like a luxurious two-night stay at The Resort at Pelican Hill-and even a glass of tap water, just to encourage giving without reward. Karl and Tina Weber, meanwhile, donated $250,000 to the cause. Attendees also recognized local business execs for their philanthropic efforts before American Idol-winner Taylor Hicks took the stage to perform his unique blend of blues and country, and end the night with a whole lot of soul. –Photos by John Gilhooley and Ashleigh Magnum
