Grand Finale

THE PARTY A bittersweet night was in store for the 395 altruists who gathered at the Newport Beach Marriott for the Cystic Fibrosis Guild’s 32nd and final gala. The affair raises money for research and care for patients with the fatal disease of the lungs and digestive system—and this particular evening looked back at the past and celebrated the future. THE GUESTS Sponsors Dino and Leslie Cancellieri, chairs Gayle and Dan Demsher, and other VIPs were moved when 28-year-old Stacy Motenko spoke about living with the condition and presented Judy and Bob Burlingham with this year’s Breath of Life award. The honor is bestowed upon longstanding supporters of the foundation’s work—so naturally attendees joined guild President Sue Hook in praising prior recipients as well. THE HIGHLIGHTS Host Shawn Parr led a rousing live auction stocked with goodies such as a trip to The Savoy in London (that went for $8,000). But the best news of all was that the fete raked in $400,000, bringing the guild’s 32-year total to more than $11 million. A big finish, indeed. –Photos by Edward Oliver and Evan Tsutsumida
