NFL pros Matt Cassel, Von Miller and Mark Sanchez put down the pigskin, traded their uniforms (of the Vikings, the Broncos and the Eagles, respectively) for suits and ties, and filled The St. Regis Monarch Beach for the Athletes First Classic gala and golf tourney benefiting the Orangewood Children’s Foundation. Some 700 notables attended the soiree, where they enjoyed wine and drinks while rubbing elbows with the football stars. There were also luxe goods to bid on, and a trip to see the Broncos’ home opener sold three times over. But that was just the start of the giving. VIPs Glenn and Mindy Stearns, and pro bowler Wes Welker were honored for their philanthropic efforts, and a moving speech from former foster youth Jacob Lindamood scored $300,000 for the nonprofit’s scholarship fund before guests hit the green the next day. Now that’s a real game changer. –Photos by Ann Chatillon
