Golden Child

Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Janet Evans took the podium for a different type of event when she attended Orangewood’s 44 Women for Children lunch at the Westin South Coast Plaza. She talked about the difference between winners and champions. They “support others, ignore criticism… and learn how to lose,” she says. It’s a striking theme that resonated with the 300 guests, who came to help raise college scholarship money for foster kids. The daytime soiree featured opportunity drawings for prizes like a Black, Starr & Frost diamond ring, but the most impactful moment came when Osiris Avalos shared how the nonprofit helped in her time of need. A true champion. Photography by Ann Chatillon
