Dream big, Orange County—local living quarters are getting grander and more luxurious by the year. Here, a glimpse at the current state of realty in our seaside paradise.
The backyard of this Newport Coast home includes cabanas, a putting green and a life-size chess set.

At 18 Coral Ridge, the Sylvester team proves bigger is better.

The completion of 18 Coral Ridge, a 12,628-square-foot stunner in Newport Coast, has been 3 ½ years in the making for father-son duo Spencer and Jim Sylvester. And they weren’t going to call the six-bedroom, 11-bathroom beauty done until perfection was achieved. Acting as the interior designer, Jim took his time sourcing top-of-the-line trimmings, including a $45,000 candy bar for the impressive theater room (that’s accessed via a secret pivoting door, natch), a $100,000 custom golf simulator and an eight-car garage that Sylvester stocked with restored Porsches and a 1938 Mercedes-Benz 320A Cabriolet flown in from Germany when previewing the home. Be sure to curl up in your nearly 2,000-square-foot master bedroom after a game in the billiards room. Oh, and the price tag? A cool $22.888 million. So go ahead, step through the French mahogany front doors, grab a bottle of wine from the 550-bottle cellar and kick back by your 70-foot pool. Does O.C. living get any more lavish?

Beloved interior designer Barclay Butera plots his next winning move with an expansion into real estate.

“We have been at the forefront of high design and the home industry for 25 years, so this seemed like a most natural extension of another level of service for our clients,” says Barclay Butera of Barclay Butera Properties, a new real estate firm he co-founded with Garrett Calacci. “We are going to focus on personalized service, and our firm will have a very boutique feel. Our areas of expertise will be the very coastal properties in Corona del Mar, Newport Beach and the entire Newport Coast.” It’s somewhat serendipitious for the local, as he’s spent his career showcasing his signature flair for luxury coastal design, and the two businesses sit just steps from one another on Pacific Coast Highway. “Being in the Newport Beach area really gives us a leg up on the wealth of knowledge [we have in] regard to the property values and neighborhoods,” he notes. And yes, the team is also available to hire for home staging and design for your on-the-market or just purchased abode.
