A former motel has reemerged as a charming boutique property thanks to a multimillion-dollar makeover. Welcome to the new Del Mar Beach Hotel, the only hotel in Del Mar located directly on San Diego’s sandy shores.

Unveiled in June, Del Mar Beach Hotel proudly holds the title of being the sole hotel in the tony beach town to be located directly on San Diego’s famous coastline. (In fact, it’s only one of two properties in the county to boast the beach as its front yard.)

The coveted lot—home of the Del Mar Motel since 1968—has been ushered into its next era thanks to Little Italy’s Azul Hospitality Group and San Clemente’s Parisi Portfolio, an international interior design firm that breathed new life into the two-story structure through a multimillion-dollar redesign. The result is a saltbox awash in ocean-inspired art and light wood accents that includes 46 California-cool guest rooms and suites, plus three residences that are ideal for both couples and families alike, housing groups of six to eight. “Our elevated beachside retreat offers something for everyone, whether guests are gathering to reconnect with each other, with themselves, or to simply experience one of SoCal’s most beautiful beachside towns,” shares general manager Taylor Miller. Those connections are easily fostered against the backdrop of the Pacific, a focal point that’s enhanced by the hotel’s complimentary beach cruisers, surfboards, waterfront yoga classes led by Four Moons and more. By night, beachfront fire pits and forthcoming sunset sound baths, movie-viewing and stargazing offer more ways to engage with both the locale and loved ones.

While guests won’t find dining within the hotel itself, well-appointed offerings are just steps away. Seafood restaurant Poseidon—a hot spot helmed by the owners of the former motel—shares the hotel’s parking lot while nearby Jake’s Del Mar offers chef-driven coastal fare for brunch, lunch and dinner. For dessert, try Del Mar Beach Hotel’s exclusive gelato, crafted by Del Mar’s An’s Hatmakers. It’s those quaint but thoughtful touches that make Del Mar Beach Hotel a gem that’s beginning to shine bright. Let the California dream begin. 858.400.8800, delmarhotel.com
